Soentjies’ Story: A Gentle Healer
Soentjies’ journey to our sanctuary began with his sister, Mammies, who appeared out of nowhere one evening asking for food. The next night, she returned with her two wild brothers. By the following day, she brought her babies, Seuntjie and Ogies, to safety. Tragically, one of the brothers was lost to a jackal that night, but Mammies, Soentjies, and the babies found refuge with us soon after.
The story of Soentjies’ name is as unique as he is. On the day he moved in, we drew a card from a oracle card deck, and it was the Kitsune card. The card foretold the arrival of a red-haired person or animal who would guide us in understanding trust. Inspired by this, Kitsune became Suni, and finally, Soentjies—meaning “kisses” in Afrikaans.
