Steps for Smudging
- Set Your Intention:
- Before you begin, take a moment to set a clear intention for your smudging ritual. This could be anything from clearing negative energy, inviting positivity, protection, or any other purpose you have in mind.
- Prepare Your Space:
- Open a window or door to provide an exit for the unwanted energy.
- Ensure you have your fireproof container handy to catch any falling ash or embers.
- Light the Smudge Stick:
- Hold the smudge stick at a 45-degree angle and light the tip using a lighter or match.
- Allow it to catch fire and burn for a few seconds before gently blowing out the flame. This should produce a smoldering stick with thick smoke.
- Use the Smoke to Cleanse:
- For a Room or Space: Starting at the entrance of the room, walk around the perimeter, gently waving the smudge stick or using a feather to direct the smoke into corners, around doorways, and into shadowed areas. Move in a clockwise direction to bring in positive energy.
- For an Object: Hold the object over the smoke, allowing the smoke to envelop it completely.
- For a Person: Gently fan the smoke around the person’s body, starting at the feet and moving upwards. Ensure the smoke touches all parts, including the back. You can do this for yourself as well.
- Focus on Your Intention:
- As you move the smoke around, keep your intention in mind. You can also say a prayer, mantra, or affirmation if that resonates with you.
- Extinguish the Smudge Stick:
- Once you have finished, extinguish the smudge stick by pressing it into the fireproof container until the smoke ceases. Do not use water as it will make relighting difficult later.
- Dispose of Ashes Properly:
- After the smudge stick has cooled down, you can bury the ashes outside as a way of returning them to the earth.
