The Elder tree is often described as a ‘whole medicine chest’ due to its leaves, root, bark, berries, twigs and flowers being used for a whole range of purposes. The flowers of the elder tree have many uses including healing Spells including physical and emotional healing. They can also be used to break Spells that have been cast against you. Make a tea from the flowers and add to your bath water to help heal spiritual and emotional issues. Add to incense blends for purification and protection of your home. In the American Hoodoo tradition, it is similarly used as a protective herb; when leaves, berries, or roots are carried they offer protection, particularly against illness.
How to use magickal Elder Leaves Herb:

Medicinal:
An extract of the flower is used to make medicine. Elderflower is used for swollen sinuses (sinusitis), colds, influenza (flu), swine flu, bronchitis, diabetes, and constipation. It is also used to increase urine production (as a diuretic), to increase sweating (as a diaphoretic), and to stop bleeding. Elderflower is also used as a gargle and mouthwash for coughs, colds, hoarseness (laryngitis), flu, and shortness of breath. It is used on the skin for joint pain (rheumatism), and pain and swelling (inflammation).
Some people put elderflower in the eyes for red eyes. In combination with gentian root, verbena, cowslip flower, and sorrel, elderflower is used for maintaining healthy sinuses and treating sinusitis.
Medicinal Preparation:
- Herbal leaves or flowers: 1 tsp per cup of boiling water. Allow to infuse for 10 min. Strain and drink.
- Herbal powders: 1 tsp per cup of boiling water
- Seeds, bark, roots, stems, berries: 20 gr per 500ml of boiling water. Strain and drink.
